World Duty Free operates Birmingham Bond, one of our two bonded warehouses, where we securely store goods that are subject to import duty and VAT. A bonded warehouse like Birmingham Bond plays a crucial role in our operations by allowing us to hold stock under what’s known as Duty Suspended status. This means that the relevant taxes are only paid when the items are sold in one of our air-side stores or shipped to a land-side location. This setup enables us to efficiently manage our inventory while ensuring compliance with tax regulations.

Due to the specialised nature of this warehouse, it is subject to rigorous oversight and can be audited by Customs at any time. This ensures that all procedures are followed correctly and that our operations remain transparent and fully compliant with legal requirements. The ability to store goods under these conditions allows us to maintain a wide and varied selection of products for our customers, offering them the best possible shopping experience.

We have a comprehensive development program for our teams, starting with basic training for all new starters and going through to management progression. All our administrators are trained internally, 20% of our leaders are developed from the warehouse team and we have trained some of our warehouse team to become Loader Drivers, helping them to obtain LGV licences. We have also had some of our Leaders transfer to retail and head office roles, sometimes at the same level and often as a promotion.

How long should you expect your interview to take?

Expect to be with us for between 1 and 3 hours, depending on the role you are applying for and the assessment activities. We’ll brief you before your interview and answer your questions so you know what to expect on the day.

Things to know about working at Birmingham Bond

As you’ll be working in an airside environment, you’ll need to be security cleared before you can start work. This can take 6-12 weeks from when you’re offered a role. We manage this process for you and will have checked your basic details prior to interview, so the chances are this will all go smoothly.

You’ll need to pass through security scanners each time you arrive for work (it’s just like when at the airport, including the same liquid restrictions) – this can take around 30 minutes. You need to incorporate getting through Security into your travel time. Once inside, there are a few key guidelines to ensure our operations run smoothly and securely. For instance, high-visibility vests and safety shoes are worn at all times, and ID passes are always displayed.

To keep our environment secure, mobile phones, bags, watches and most jewellery stay in lockers. Plus, anything we sell or stock must be declared before bringing it into the warehouse. This attention to detail ensures that every day at Birmingham Bond is not only safe but also compliant.
